Blackberry and other mobile phones do recordings into the AMR file format. Not all computers can reliably read this format, so we'll show you a quick way to convert it to MP3, for free, WITHOUT installing any software.
Convert AMR to MP3 - First, go to Media-Convert, a free online media converter web site.
- Next, click on the Browse... button and choose the AMR file on your computer. The "Input Format" box should instantly change to "Adaptive Multi-Rate (.amr)" - if not, choose it from the list.
- The output format should be set to "MPEG 1/2 - Audio Layer 3 (.mp3)"
- Click the OK button, and the file will be uploaded to Media-Convert and analyzed, which might take a few moments, depending on the size of the recording.
- It will then ask you what the encoding bit-rate should be. Most mobile phones like the Blackberry will record low-quality audio by default, so by putting a low value here, you can reduce the file size without necessarily lowering the quality of the audio. I suggest using 64 or 128 for the encoding bit-rate.
- Leave the encoding method set to be CBR, unless you are dealing with a high-quality recording.
- Click OK
- After a few more moments, your MP3 file will be ready - click the Download button to get your new MP3 version of the file.
