Every time I open Windows Media Player to watch video it locks up. If its video from the web it starts up "connecting" and never goes any farther. After that there is "no response" and it is difficult to close it. Then after its closed the computer is extremely slow and the pointer is very unstable and sluggish until I reboot. This problem continued even after I reformatted the hard drive starting all over again. I use Windows XP with 2.5 GHZ celeron and 512 MB ram. Any suggestions?

does it do the same with music files?

if not, have you installed any codec packs?

if codec packs are installed, try uninstalling them and reinstalling them.

if no codecs are installed, you shouldnt really be locking up, but maybe it would be a good idea to install some.

a way of ruling out a hardware issue would be to install the free VLC player ( http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ ) and try to play the files thru there.

Let us know your results!

Thanks MrDarn for taking the time to offer advice. I found the problem. I had to update my graphics card driver which enabled it to work for web based video. When I inserted a DVD I didn't get a lockup but a window indicating there was no DVD decoder. That surprised me because it was an update of Media Player 11. I loaded a decoder and it works fine.
Thanks again
