laptop lockup when connecting to internet

i have a medion cybermaxx laptop, 2.4 processor ,1 gig ram. when i try to connect to the internet using a wifi card it tends to lockup for up to 6-7 mins . driving me insane !!! i have used cclean and followed the instructions for removing malware etc. has anyone got any ideas? i would be very gratefull for any suggestions.

Do you have the latest drivers for the wifi card? Charlie

thanks for your reply. i use a linksys wireless g notebook adapter wpc54g and there does not seem to be an updated driver for it.
