Upon somebody's suggestion I downloaded ZoneAlarm Free yesterday and ever since it's been pure misery. I just did a speed test and I'm not even getting 1 Meg compared to the 10 Meb service I'm subscribed to. My PC is stubborn from startup to shutdown and I'm not sure I'll keep the program. I know I need protection but at what cost? Do I really need to open my piggy bank and purchase something a little more friendly, or are there any recommended procedures I might need to go through to "fine-tune" the program. On a positive note, the CCCleaner is super!

I would guess that you may have accidentally chosen to block something you needed, it could be conflicting with another program that is running, or it could be a configuration issue.

or... you have a hardware firewall (a.k.a. a router).

That Zone Alarm Free was such a pain I went ahead and uninstalled it. Turns out I have Windows Firewall already, so I'm covered. Thanks anyway.

Just so you know, the windows firewall is a one-way firewall. It only checks what comes in, not what goes out. Zone alarm checks both. Some malware collects data and sends it back to the bad guys. Windows firewall will not catch that. I have used Zone Alarm on over a dozen computers with no problems. Charlie

I understand what you're saying, Charlie, but did any of your applications result in slower speeds? I may have to disable Windows firewall first, huh.

I think that the rule is still one (active) software firewall at a time. Did you turn Windows firewall off when you had Zone Alarm? If not, you might want to try it again that way.
