lost internet connection

when I am connected to the internet and viewing websites I lose my connection when I shut my laptop for an hour or more. The connection is wireless and shows I am connected however when I click on the website I get the IE cannot display page. If I restart all is fine.

why do I lose this web connection? is my IP address becoming inactive after a period of non use?

Your laptop is probably set for Power Saver .. hibernation or some similar setting in order not to overheat or run your battery down when not in use. To check your setting, right click on your desktop > Properties > Screensaver > Power button > check the settings.

This loss of connection to the web happens when I am plugged in to an outlet for power. the power settngs are set to never shut off monitor and hard drive. they are set to shut off monitor and hard drives after 25 minutes.

under power option properties/power schemes i have never checked for hibernate. under power option properties/hibernate the enabled box is checked. should i uncheck this box?

For now, uncheck the hibernation setting > OK. Reboot your PC and see if the problem is solved. If it works, try checking the box again and see if the problem comes back. I personally will turn the laptop off if I know I'm going to be away for more than an hour, it allows time for cooling down. Hibernation and Standby are designed to save battery life, if you have your laptop plugged into power, hibernation and standby are really redundant. see http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/mobility/getst arted/hibernate.mspx

thanks Canuck. I'll try and let you know the results.I always put a spacer under my laptop to allow the heat to dissapate. sometimes I leave it on so because I check it often for email, etc.
