What is meant by "crashing the hard drive"?

Many different meanings actually and always depends on the person describing the problem.

I refer to a hard drive crash as a physical malfunction with the drive by either the motors/circuit board/connections going bad. The worse yet, is a header crash. The inside of your hard drive looks like a multi layered phonograph. There's a needle and a record (actually 2 or more records and 2 or more needles). The difference, the needle on a hard drive should never physically touch the platters (records). If that happens, that is what's known as a header crash.

well, that sums up my definition(s) of a hard drive crash.

So, Partie. It sounds like the only remedy is replacement of the hard drive. Is that about right? By the way, I don't believe that to be my problem as of this moment. (I get dumped from time to time from the internet. I attribute that to too small a hard drive(6 Mb) and too small a memory (128 Kb)). I believe I will be shopping next week for a new PC.(this one is a hand-me-down from my pops. Custom-built. Probably 10 years old or older).

A good portion of the time it's usually best to get a new hard drive but there have been times where an easy switch of the circuit board (5-10 minutes) or a re-soldering a joint will do the trick.

There are, of course, very good data recovery centers out there but they can cost big money. Which doesn't effectively get your hard drive back so I guess this was a little off topic.

Yeah, Partie, I've been shopping around for a new desktop and lo and behold, Walmart carries a brand called Acer. I had never heard of them before but after a little investigating it turns out (or so they claim) that they are the no. 3 selling PC manufacturer in the country. You know anything about these guys? The specs seem alright and upon talking to a Walmart associate, it turns out that they sell quite a few of them Acers and virtually none of them come back. What's your two cents?

none of them come back because they are contracted to another company who "fix" them... we have the same advice at britans counterpart "asda". although, to be hnest, i've had a few people ignore my advice and it turns out they are quite good machines....go figure!

Well, Mr Darn, that just blows away my trust and confidence. Guess I'll have to dig a little deeper or go elsewhere. I was truly believing them to be a bargain and I'll still allow them the smallest benefit of the doubt. Pending research. I've got some time to "bat it around" as I'm not making a decision for another two weeks.(family priorities). Speaking of scams has anyone gone to www.piratesonline.com to download a "free" game by virtue of Disney? Turns out the print ain't so small as I felt I was conned by these industrial giants. One has to "subscribe" in order to get the most basic download. LIke always, they want money, money, and money. Oh yeah, did I mention they want money?
