I've been having two problems with my laptop lately...

1)
ctrl+alt+del is not working when I use the left ctrl key. I've tried every combination of ctrl+alt+del (i.e. on both left and right sides) and it always doesn't work when I use the left ctrl key. It doesn't seem to be a probelm with the left ctrl key itself, because I can still use it to activate other hotkeys.

2)
My screen seems to be a little 'unstable'. On some days, when I open/close the lid of my laptop, the screen is flashy and makes buzzing noises. Sometimes, when it's open, the screen will flash a few times and then black out, but I can still faintly see the outlines/shadows of the things on my screen. And then some days, it works perfectly fine.

If anyone could enlighten me as to what is wrong with my laptop, I'd really appreciate it!

Both problems may be connected. It sounds like a bad connection. Have you damaged the laptop or spilt some liquid on it? Stay tuned for other's input.

I haven't spilt anything on the laptop and there hasn't been any 'real' damage to it. But it is getting old (almost 4 years), so it's probably suffered some wear and tear along the way when I've taken it with me to places.

I was also thinking the screen thing seems like a connection problem. But I don't know the tech, so I'm not sure how to confirm this or go about fixing it.

The CTRL+ALT+DEL, I have no clue. It seems to work sometimes and not others.

Does your left control key do any other functions, like ctrl + C ( highlight a line of print Ctrl + C, open notepad for example and see if pastes the print). If no go, I would suggest that either the key is getting stuck or there is a short.

Unless your technically inclined to take your laptop apart, I'd suggest taking it into a repair shop and getting them to take a look at both the key and monitor problems.

Yes, the CTRL key does work for other functions. It seems like it works for some things (i.e. copy, paste, etc.) and not others (i.e. ctrl+alt+del). That's why I'm thinking/hoping that it's not a problem with the key itself.

The screen problem has disappeared in the last few days, but I should probably get it checked out.

Thanks!

Try this fix from Kelly's Korner http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_t.htm under Taskbar, last entry try the 'Repair' and see if that helps. I've done a fair amount of checking on this problem, and it seems you're not alone, however nothing really sticks out for a solution. The fix I mention and perhaps doing a virus scan may help. Stay tuned for others input.
