Hi.I have just purchased a laptop with vista and wanted to know how to create a backup image on an external hard drive. Can anyone recommend a programe (prefer free) and the steps to create an image and also how to recover the image back on to the laptop if it requires reformating.

Download the Windows AIK from Microsoft (free). Then, follow the directions to create a windows PE bootable CDRom drive and then read the directions on how to use "imagex" (command line hdd image utility from MS).
