When running secunia it should give a file location of the outdated file. ExampleC:\Windows\System\macromedia\???? You may need to manually delete the outdated files. I have had to do that a time or two myself.
It won't hurt to go ahead and do the rest of the steps and locate the files later if needed. _________________ sǝƃɐd slıʌǝ |

After doing all the steps you mentioned and I ran an AVG scan and it says that there are two warnings. The two objects are: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility\......
What should I do about these warnings so that they don't come up again?
Also after doing the scan, I opened Internet Explorer and WinPatrol popped up about a new Internet Explorer ActiveX Component has been registered on my system. The location it mentioned is C:\WINDOWS\system32\msxml3.dll.
MSXML 3.0 SP9
Microsoft Corporation Version 8.90.1101.0
I went ahead and clicked yes. Was that the right choice?
Lastly, is there any way to delete Windows Messenger? I never use it. |

When AVG finds something just have it put in quarantine. If the PC continues to run fine then it is safe for 24 hours or so then it is safe to go ahead and empty the quarantine.

Good choice
Disable/Remove Windows Messenger
So everything must be still doing fine? _________________ sǝƃɐd slıʌǝ |

Yes, everything is doing fine now. Thank you!
So should I go ahead and get the SP3 for Windows?
Also, are there any good articles about what services I should or need to have running in the background and what I don't? |

I have been running it for a week or so now with no problems. I would back up everything important before installing it just to be safe.
A good resource for services is Black Viper's XP Services Configuration, or search on Google for any that are unknown. Most will be needed but there are usually a few that can be done away with. I haven't used the Black Viper page in a while so am unsure how it may have changed.
CCleaner also has a startup manager.
Open CCleaner click Tools then Startup
You can delete any unneeded items from there.
Be careful, there is no backup.
Because the startup loads drivers and some programs you may need, be careful removing items you are unsure of.
For quick reference use these online databases.
