help to fix errors with internet explorer

i have been experiencing a multitude of issues in the last 12 months. most troubling being that i'm not able to keep my antispyware program up to date. get error message: unble to udate, error downloading one or more files. had my hard drive re -configured???and windows re installed as was told it was a registry prob. was told this would fix probs but did not. have just been through all steps suggested before posting this topic,although short on cash and unable to pay for programs, if there are programs that are free, i would be able to fix the issues or a way i can ifx them myself. any tips would be appreciated. currently have pctools spyware doc with antivirus subscription but about to try AVG free. most downloads get error message: corrupt source file. and im unable to install programs, including windows updates.
