Hello,
I was trying to do all the downloads recommended in the BEFORE POSTING READ THIS FIRST! post, and since the computer seemed to slowed down, i stopped all but the AVG download, until i checked on the download manager the time left to download was over 33 hours!!
since i felt it was an error i canceled that and started all over again.. when it reached over 6 hours it status changed to retrying, and now the time left is almost 25 hours..
my concern is before i started downloading, i uninstalled the norton software that came with this comp. that i just got last week, i never thought that the download was going to take this much time, and my comp. is now with no protection.. is this downloading times correct? or am i having another problem?
thank you very much in advance for your help and best regards!
martha

thank you very much for your answer. i tried the avast, same results, the first attempt again appeared a very long downloading time, i canceled it and tried again, this time it finished but it sent this error message:
"Setup Selfextract
An error 1003(000003E) has ocurred. Last operation was: opening the self extract archive
Try to download setup file again"

I am about to do that, but I would like to know what is the problem..

The first reason I contacted Help 2 Go was this error message that I have been having since I conected this computer that I just got last May the 5th, maybe this problem is causing the problems in the downloads..
please let me know if I can explain my original problem here or should I wait until solving the anti virus problems and finish installing the other 3 recommended software of the Before posting read this first! post, and then start a new post on the original problem..
thank you very much!!

With times that long, I am assuming this is dial up. On a good dial up connection, it shouldn't take more than 2 or 3 hours. However, if there is static and other background noise, it can be nearly impossible to get a good non-corrupted download of a large file. My suggestion would be to download the file on a friends computer that has broadband, then either burn it to a Cd or save it to a USB pen drive. Take it to your computer and install. Charlie

Also, check your PM (private messages).

You indicated that this is broadband. Does it surf the web OK? Is it just the downloads that are a problem? CD is on the way. I'm guessing that you have some infections on the computer. After installing the antivirus, post your Hijack log and one somebody will take a look at it. charlie

sorry that I was not able to reply before... I am not in my computer this time, and away from dallas, in austin doing a medical study, here I am able to use the internet but I am not able to download anything...
I have been having a lot of problems with my computer,.. the web surfing is, in fact, terrible, it takes a long time to load any page, when it does, and some times the page does not load at all..
the original error that was showing was "Windows has encontered a critical problem and will restart automatically in one minute. Please save your work now" and it keep on doing that as soon as i would sign in to windows...
the last days it was not showing that error message that that often but it kept me struggling almost always i would try to look something on the internet...
the cable guy went last tuesday to check it, because i thought maybe it was a defective modem or something dealing with the internet service (reason: if I would turn the computer off, unplug the ethernet cable, and then turn the computer on, the computer would go ok for hours untill i would plug the ethernet cable again, then the computer would show that error message again, and restart again and again), and he was not able to find the root of the problem, he thought that maybe it could be the OS, but he could not be 100% sure, and he told me that he has seen a lot of problems with this Vista OS, and he recommended to switch to a mac..
I am coming back home next tuesday, the 20th, and I think I am definitely going tu return the computer and get me a mac..
do you know something about this kind of error message? or this problems downloading and surfing? is this a common thing on windows vista OS? or vista + HP laptops?
thank you very much for all your help, again!!

i would say its definatly a simple ethernet driver problem.

most probably the result of a defective windows update.

If ethernet is the only problem, update your network drivers.

thank you..
when you say is an ethernet problem, do you mean the cable? because I changed it a few days ago and the problem remained, and then the cable guy try his own ethernet cable and a new modem, and the problem was still there.. but the funny thing is, when he unplugged my computer and plugged his own (another laptop) the error stopped.. and his OS was XP...
and, as he told me, he has never seen anything like it, and well, he was not able to fix a thing..

by ethernet problem i mean physically with your pc.

either the port damaged physically or a simple driver malfunction.

go to 'control panel' then 'system'

choose device manager and look for the network section.

look for yellow !

if none, right click each entry one by one, select 'properties' and try firstly updating drivers, testing the functionality of the ethernet port after each update.

should none work, try rolling back the driver at the same place.

If this still does not work, try uninstalling the device one by one, restarting and allowing windows to detect it and install the driver for you.

if STILL nothing, were gonna need some more info from you, namely your network card serial # and make.....

thanks a lot, I am going to try that as soon as I get home, next tuesday, the 20th...
the thing is, I do not know if i did mention this before.. the same error happened before to this other laptop, on may 4th, the first one i bought on best buy, the same windows critical problem, and as it kept restarting over and over again, i just unplugged it and returned it to the store the next day, for a physical exchange, and when i took this second laptop home, and the same error was still there, i contacted HP support, i explained my problem, the guy couldn't identify it, he said it was not the computer because what were the chances the same error appear in 2 different laptops?, and concluded that almost for sure it was the modem or the ethernet cable, that is when i contacted you guys, and at the same time reported the problem with my cable company, they send this guy with the results you already know... this all is very weird.. i really would like to keep the laptop, because i like it a lot, but if is it going to be like this always i better accept the cable guy recommendation and switch it for a mac.. the bad thing is i'll have to pay over 600 more for the cheapest mac that we want, one of those all in one..
