I have been trying to install a WD500AKSS 500 gb drive to no success. My system is XP Pro on a SuperMicro X6DAL-XTG mobo. Can't get info from any manfacturers. My mobo manual states the following: ...for drive capacities over 137 gb your system must be equipped with 48-bit LBA mode addressing. If not, install an ATA/133IDE controller card that supports 48-bit LBA mode. This drive is a SATA II drive and my mobo I believe was manufatured before SATA II's were available. I have jumpered it to act as SATA I and I have been able to format the disk. But the system refuses to recognize the drive after a few uses - and I received record/retrieve errors when trying. Is there a SATA card I can install to run this drive? I'd like to run it as a SATA II drive. Any help or card suggestions would be helpful. Thanks. |

Yes, I thought that to. I have not updated the bios. Kind of afraid to do that since I have a lot of data and programs on the computer - I'm not a geek but just know enough to be dangerous. Spoke to SuperMicro and they never mentioned updating to most recent bios...claim board should handle it but when the system reboots it hangs up and won't boot. Have to disconnect the drive and system reboots...also receive record/retrieve errors. I understand flashing the bios could be problematic...am I wrong? |

Yes, anything can be problematic if you don't do it right. 9.99 times out of 10 it works problem free. One thing you have to make sure of is that you write down your settings in BIOS now, make sure there's no lightening storms going on so you don't lose power during the process and make sure you're using a new floppy. That's it.

Trying to flash the bios...made disk but hangs at "Loading FreeDos...Fat Kernel-". I Have NTSF formatted disks (video editing) - perhaps I need FAT32 formatting? What's the problem? Ambo |
