Hello everyone Smile
I was thinking of writing a internet/network security paper specific to this board. I was just wondering if you guys would think it's a good idea. I would try to keep it simple and leave out as much in-depth technical info as viable. Some of the included topics I was thinking of covering would be:
Introduction into netrworking (Modems, routers, switches, wireless technologies etc.)
*Configuring and securing networked devices.
*Software based security (firewalls, AV, Spyware detection etc.)
*Internet security (email, phishing, personal information)
*Security myths, such as the old "I have nothing on my computer that I need to worry about, so I don't need security software."
Also I was hoping to have some of the other board members views on different aspects of security software that they have used or tested. Please let me know what you think and also what else I should put in or leave out...... or even if you think this idea is a good one.
Chhers, Lucent.

Go for it Wink

As far as what some of us use is all here:

http://www.help2go.com/Tutorials/Protect_Your_PC/Avoid_ Web_Browser_Hijackers.html

I just love it when a poster is asked why they don't have A/V or Firewall and them come back and say " Don't need them because they slow me down".

I think it would be a good idea also. Please make sure to include networking printers in there also. I am going to be trying to do one soon and could use the help Razz

^^ yeah man, if you want a hand with anything let me know and I'd be willing to help. Have been trying to think about something to write about lately...maybe also include something on how to setup an IDS

Cheers partie,
I would love to include IDS/IPS, as most firewalls are integrating them into their software these days. But you can't beat a standalone box with snort and an ethernet tap running Smile What platform did you want to run an IDS on?I can add a section that is based on linux though if nobody has any objections. Maybe a LAMP distro with snort, snortsam and something like BASE?
It's looking to be a fairly long document but I think what you should be able to skip over to what you want to know pretty easily. As for help, I'm hoping you guys can read the drafts and offer input and help trimming it up or even adding sections. I'm having trouble keeping it short though....I'm trying to keep it from becoming book-like Smile
Anyway I'll post a draft soon.
Cheers, Lucent.

Me personally, none, I already have one. It's a standalone ubuntu box. Just thought it would be nice to include ...
