As the subject line says, AVG 8 free version is now available. AVG 7 free will no longer be supported by the end of May. Free download available here http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download?prd=afe . Be sure to uninstall AVG 7 using the Add/Remove Software in Control Panel > do a cleanup with ccleaner (clears out the old registry keys etc.) reboot and download free AVG 8.
Note: Vista users .. a window may appear asking if you're running Vista 32 bit or 64 bit .. click on your version to get a Microsoft patch. It appears this patch is needed before downloading AVG 8. Perhaps a Vista user could confirm this?

Thanks Canuck!
Wanted to add a little note here for peoples AVG Anti-Spyware and AVG Anti-Rootkit are not included they are now unavailable unless you have a purchased version of the program.

I have yet to install this myself but I have noticed quite a bit of confusion round the web about - mainly - the email scanner not being available on the free version after 30 days. You have to pay for it.
I don't think this is right.
I think the confusion is because the free version AND the "paid" version of AVG are now both at version 8 and nags/pop ups from Grisoft urge people to upgrade but give them the link to the "paid" version.
The result .... users go ahead, click the link and install the trial of the paid version without realising it.
I believe the email scanner is still included in the free version. Unless anyone knows differently .....

AVG 8 will work with 64 bit XP, 7.5 would not. As far as the confusion goes, it is built into the download sight. The paid versions are clearly marked and you can go there on one click. The free version is poorly labeled and it takes about 3 clicks to get there- people get lost on the way and end up with the 30 day trial of the paid version. Charlie

Well put, gimm322.
I have today uninstalled v7.5, installed the free v8 and all seems to be well so far (having created a SR point and backed up before I did the deed).
Only annoyance is some sort of notification box tagging itself on to the foot of the AVG user interface panel. I keep checking "hide notification" but it keeps returning every time I open the interface again.
Any idea on how to set the preferences etc. so as not to show this notification message at all?
Cheers.

Just above the notification (bottom left of interface panel) should be a button 'Hide Notification' .. click that.

Yep. Tried that (as I mentioned in my last post) but the thing keeps coming back every time I open the user interface. Just opened it again and got this .....
