I had asked this before but please how do you get rid of Windows Messenger? I got rid of the pop ups but the icon still hangs out on the bar and would like to see it disappear and off my computer. Thank you.

Go to this site, http://www.dougknox.com/index.html . It's an excellent place for xp tweeks etc. Go to Win XP Utilities, you'll find removal instructions.

Good luck Very Happy

Windows Messenger differs from the more commonly know MSN Messenger. Windows Messenger was designed as an instant messenger for LANs but a flaw allowed exploitation via the Net.
Unfortunately Microsoft installed it by default, something that will change when XP sp2 is released.
Meanwhile you can do the following for your operating system.

Windows 2000
Click Start-> Settings-> Control Panel-> Administrative Tools->Services
Scroll down and highlight "Messenger"
Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.
Click the STOP button.
Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar
Click OK

Windows XP Home
Click Start->Settings ->Control Panel
Click Performance and Maintenance
Click Administrative Tools
Double click Services Scroll
down and highlight "Messenger"
Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.
Click the STOP button.
Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar
Click OK

Windows XP Professional
Click Start->Settings ->Control Panel
Click Administrative Tools
Click Services
Double click Services Scroll
down and highlight "Messenger"
Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.
Click the STOP button.
Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar
Click OK

Windows NT
Click Start ->Control Panel
Double Click Administrative Tools
Select Services-> Double-click on Messenger
In the Messenger Properties window, select Stop,
Then choose Disable as the Startup Type
Click OK

Windows 98 & ME
Windows Messenger Service cannot be disabled
