Hi Partie - I gather you're impressed.

Not really "impressed"..more "amazed" by how big and how much of an update it truely is. Funnier thing is, they aren't totally finished with it yet which means they could actually update it even more. The update file for the english version is 273MB.. WOW! Also, I'm writing about the new stuff and people usually like pretty pictures, so I though I'd give them some Wink .

I read somewhere(was it here? Who knows)That MS has shelved the Longhorn programme for, I think it was 18 months, and all resources are being directed to making XP more secure. There are that many holes in it they are considering marketing it as a sieve. Trust Bill to make yet more money out of their own mistakes. I'm a sucker for pretty pictures.

Well I read something like that @ tomshardware.com and they said Microsoft actually denies the "delay" of Longhorn because of XP. They say they are delaying longhorn because of the way they get rid of support for OSes

Didn't really want to start a new thread for this so I decided to put it here.

Since I've installed the SP2 RC1 on my machine i've been doing a hunt for new command line tools and came across a file named...

blastcln.exe

ha, low and behold MS put it there. It's an MSBlast cleaner tool.

Microsoft.com wrote:

A situation has been identified where the Blaster worm could have infected some systems before the application of MS03-026 [KB823980] or MS03-039 [KB824146]. This tool will help remove the Blaster worm from these systems. For systems with MS03-026 [KB823980] or MS03-039 [KB824146] already installed, no further action is needed once this tool is installed. Install this tool to help remove this worm from your PC.

I installed SP2 beta a while ago. Articles I've read about the changes it makes mostly talk about the improved firewall that monitors outgoing and incoming information (it was just incoming before). There is also the popup blocker added to IE. Since SP2 creates a backup file of 565Mb though, there would seem to be much more to it than that.

I read the release date for SP2 final has been delayed until the last quarter of this year. There is speculation that this is to allow time to integrate not only a firewall but also anti-virus software. Maybe even spyware blocking/removal tools too ...all operational as the default setting. If this happens, I suppose we might see the demise of a few well known anti-virus and anti-spyware names. Some more legal battles perhaps? All speculation at the moment anyway.

Maybe Bill feels he should include these features in an effort to prevent the spread of viruses and worms by those who are a bit lax in taking precautions for themselves. I hope it works. If this is the case, I wonder if any anti-virus program (or other software) provided with the OS will be as good as that provided by the well known brands in the security field.

Partie - Do you think the firewall in SP2 is as good as ZoneAlarm?

*EDIT* Oops! sorry, missed a couple of words out in the third paragraph. Embarassed

Like anything to do with Micro (we own the word windws) Scope I'll wait until the update of the update patch of the second issue of sp2 comes out.
As for longhorn, or better knows as Longwait, I'll wait a little longer, like at least till Longhorn SP1.
