Osc, I don't know if this is possible, but it may give some food for thought.

1) PM's - Unless a member opens the home page or goes into their profile, they don't know if they have any PM's. Would it be possible for there to be a flashing or even a coloured notice on each forum and page saying something to the effect "You have PM's to be read" click on it and go to the PM page? The reason I ask this is that the eye is not caught on the top right that indicates the PM status (I have 4 PM's in my outbox waiting to be 'picked up' one has been there for about 4-5 days and I know the members have been on the site and posting).

2) Similar to 1) is some kind of flashing or eye catching way of bringing your attention to a new shout. Just click on the shout out and it will revert to normal. I know when I'm involved in writing or researching I am totally focused on that and miss if someone wants to pass on a message and for it to be read in a timely manner. Case in point, Basement sees I'm on site and asks for me to contact him. I totally missed the request and by the time I saw it he was not available. (perhaps the Chat Line that has been mentioned before would be the answer?).

Anyway, thought I'd ask and see what falls out the tree!

The PM thing is easily solved by adding a MOD to the forum. I actually have one on my site that makes the font blink and then has a computer voice saying "New Messages" when you have a new PM. Unfortunately though, for the colored thing..it has to do with phpBB as a standalone bulletin board. The way this site is setup it's actualy a ported MOD for this CMS (phpNuke), not sure if there are any pre-made mods for this but I'm sure OSC could figure it out in time.
