Nice article, I have always been meaning to get round to registering my own name. Guess I'm lucky it's still free after all this time.
One thing though regarding squatting. Sometimes it is the big corporations that are in the wrong, using their big profile to try and bully their way into getting what they want. I have been following the case of www.nissan.com over the years with some interest, and it really seems to me that nissan (the car people) have acted with a great amount of arrogance over the whole matter.
I definitely agree - there are loads of cases that have been unfairly decided for the big corporations instead of the little guy. Thinking back, if I had actually registered oscar.com, I'm sure I would have been sued sooner or later.
Hopefully ICANN will clean up its act, but the board is controlled by big corporate interests...
OSC, just a quick thank you for this great article. I re-read it once again before registering my own name with namecheap. At only $8.88 (approx £5.22) per year I would second your suggestion to use them. It is worth it for the email forwarding alone. I may also sign up to their POP3 service too.
One thing I think is worth mentioning though. The free "whois" protection is not allocated to your domain by default, you have to use your control panel on namecheap to activate it. A small detail but worth mentioning otherwise all your personal details are there for the world to see by simply entering your website address into any of the many whois look-ups.
That's a good point. Also the free WHOIS protection seems to only last for 1 year.
I put a PO Box in a lot of my WHOIS entries, if not fake info altogether. As long as you have a valid email address in there, it should be fine. _________________ Oscar Sodani
