G'day,
I'm looking at getting a domain name and setting up a basic website for a small bussiness in Australia. If you have any advice, suggestions or useful links they would be appreciated.
Edit: ( There are forums related to domain names and webhosting: check out http://www.domainnameforums.com/ and http://www.webhostingtalk.com/index.php which has some tutroials also)
I've read several articles here at Help2Go and there is a lot of detailed information on the subject at: http://www.findmyhosting.com/
But one thing I'm unsure about is the transfeer of domain names and associated fees.
I see that you can register a domain name fairly cheaply with a registrar for a yearly fee. But if you are not hosting the website with them you need to pay a yearly transfer fee to enable your chosen web hosting service to use it. I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on this for me.

I've never had to pay a yearly "transfer" fee. I only had to pay the $5.00-$7.00 a year and then just pay for hosting from whoever I chose. I usually go with godaddy.com for a domain name and then bluehost or 1&1 for hosting (it all depends on how I feel and if I want CPanel or a different control panel).
That's about all I can offer.

G'day PartyHoteuse,
Thanks for that, I'll check out the registrars and webhosts you mentioned.
It seems that the transfer fee relates to transfering your domain name from one registrar to another registrar, and is not a yearly fee.
I see there are a lot of free Web Templates avaliable in the internet. Has anyone come across any good ones that are quick to set up. They might be an options for me as the web site only needs to be very basic.

not sure what kind of business this is going to be for but maybe you could look into CMS' (pre-built dynamic websites, sorta like help2go). They are extremely configurable and you can add (or take away) what you do/don't want. If I'm not mistaken Osc is using Joomla! here, there's also Xoops, Mambo, phpNuke, postNuke, plus many many more. As far as just plain HTML templates I'm not sure of any sites that have any that are free to use on a commercial site but I'm sure a quick google search will yield you some good results.

Thanks Partie,
I'll have a look at the Content Managment Systems you mentioned.
There are quite a few free website templets avaliable. Here's are a couple I've come across in case anyone is interested:
http://www.steves-templates.com/
http://www.freetemplatesonline.com/index.php
And a "Beginners Guided To Web Design":
http://www.bwdzine.net/bwdt//index.html
However from the little I have read so far there are some desired properties a website should have. For example: crawl ability by search engines, fast loading speed, and the inclusion of keywords to increase ranking.
For now I'll grab the domain names I want and 'park' them with a webhosting company. In the mean time I learn a bit more. Or perhaps I will use the bundled hosting and design packages available form various Internet Service Providers. Or get a professional web designer to do it for me.
One good bit of advice I found to get more exposure and secure your business name was to secure your chosen domain name with various top level extension, and also another top level domain name that contains keywords relating to the nature of your service or product that will be directed to your primary domain.
For examlpe for an Australian rubbish removal business:
Get rubbish.com.au as your primary domain.
Get rubbish.com and have it directed to your primary domain
And get rubbish-removal-australia.com which will be more searchable by some search engine as the hyphens are seen as spaces and the content is effectivly keywords.

I really like namecheap.com for domain registration. They offer more configuration options than godaddy - I always feel like I am in complete control of the domain.
For hosting, I use 1&1 as well. _________________ Oscar Sodani

Hi Leah, Osc,
Thanks Leah I will check it out.
I wrote a reply but timed out and I lost it, not to worry.
If your passing through Osc could you mention some of the issues you are aware of in regards to configuration options that registrars might offer. And also perhaps issues which affect the control you have over your domain name. I havn't drill down that far yet.
Do you think it is improtant to registar your domain name with a registrar who is a memember of ICANN: http://www.icann.org/
ICANN has a lits of there members: http://www.internic.net/regist.html
