Any time I try to download ANYTHING with Firefox, regardless of the version I have installed, regardless of whether I have extensions installed, the download window does not appear on it's own. I go to tools>downloads (or hit ctrl+j) to pull up the window and there is NOTHING there. But, if I look on my desktop, it shows the file TRYING to download. I've uninstalled FF, reinstalled FF, and done everything I can possibly think of but this isn't fixed. Also: Even if I uninstall FF, it STILL saves my bookmarks, add-ons and preferences for when I reinstall it. I don't want this to happen.

Sorry about all the CAPS but I'm so frustrated right now I can hardly speak.

Your help would make my night.

Thanks,
RKJ

Try starting FireFox in safe mode and see if you still have problems. FireFox's safe mode runs it without any add-ons or extensions which can sometimes be problematic. Let us know if it downloads ok from safe mode and we will go from there.

Safe Mode doesn't work either... and I don't have any add-ons installed anymore anyway so that can't be the problem.

You mentioned that you have tried different versions, what version are you currently using?

Lets see what happens when we do this
  • in FireFox click Tools
  • Options...
  • highlight Main at the top of the window
  • check Show the Downloads window when downloading a file
  • while still in this Window double check the location you have it set download files to
  • click ok

These directions are for version 2.0. If you are using 1.5 it may be slightly different.

Let us know if this helps.

I agree with Clark, try a clean install of Firefox 2 and see if that resolves the problem.

I'm using 2.0... and the "show downloads" thing isn't the problem. That was the first thing I checked when I started having that problem.

I would try a "clean" install, but FF is saving my preferences SOMEWHERE on my computer... so when I reinstall it they're all there.

RyliFox

Your preferences are stored in your profile folder. Try resetting your preferences. The directions are all in this link:

All preferences have been reset... problem still happening.
Files seem to actually download, but it's a pain in my rear that they don't show up in the downloads window.
Without that, there is no progress bar and I have no idea how long my downloads will take...

Try the Download Statusbar extension. While it may not fix the underlying problem, at least you might have useful download information. It's one of the first extensions I install on new Firefox setups.

With Firefox closed, go into the Profiles folder and delete the file called downloads.rdf. Try a download. Profiles folder location:

C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxx\ (xxxxxxx is a string of random letters and numbers).

I wish I was a genius. The suggestion comes as a result of having used Firefox for a number of years and out of pure interest, spending alot of time reading and searching the Mozilla forums and Knowledge Base. That's where lots of Firefox geniuses live and where I learned that little snippet of information from. Glad I could relay it on to you and be of help. Smile
