I've spent some time on the problem of organizing my digital photos, in particular. I want to be able to find them, move them to a central location, eliminate duplicates, correct 'taken on dates,' and add tags. I have thousands of photos and I found that Picasa wasn't really up to this kind of large-scale overhaul.

After some research, I settled on three free utilities. Two are plugins for Windows Explorer, which means you can right click on a file and get access to and modify photo information, and also to skim through a put files in a 'basket' and then dump the basket into a folder. A separate application lets you quickly find duplicate files, so you can get rid of excess copies that are just taking up room on your disk.

I wrote a screencast about the problem and my solutions here:

Much of this strategy applies to other kinds of files, as well.
