Windows ME, Intel 933 Mhz Pentium 111 Processor, 511.O MB RAM, 56K Modem, 20GB Ultra ATA Hard drive (9.22 GB Free)
System Resources 55 percent free.
**********************

With following your instructions I have been doing pretty well the past year until about a week ago.

Having trouble connecting to internet and staying connected. Something running in background that I cannot find. It shuts down and freezes pages I am using when on the internet and when I am not and interrupts my defrag making it restart several times.

I have everything you said to download and all the scans of the other programs come up clean. Cannot use Housecall, Panda, Windows Defender or get critical updates since they no longer support Windows ME. Did a modem check and it is OK. Have run tune-up wizard, CCleaner, defragged, run scan disk to repair and found no problems with disk and unloaded a couple of GBs of files. I keep all of them up-dated regularly.

My old Hijack This quit working so I downloaded HijackThis 2.0.2 as per your instructions but when I try to run a scan it quits with the message (not responding). I have redownloaded and reinstalled it 4 times and have the same problem.

There are 3 HJT download versions to click on at Trend's site. I downloaded the one you said to but cannot get it to scan.

Also downloaded both the SUPERAntiSpyware and the Pro trial and couldn't get either to install. Just got message to wait while Windows configures, but 30 minutes later nothing happened (several tries with each) or other message that it couldn't install to drive F. F is my external storage drive which I don't keep connected.

Is there any help for getting HJT to scan? I emailed Trend but have not heard back from them and doubt that I will , they do not give support for their free programs.

I have been trying for a week and am at my wit's end. If anyone can help I know it is here, you guys have worked miracles for me before.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Kerry

Can't help you with your HJT problem, but let's find out what's running in your background. Go to Start > Run > type in msconfig >OK > Startup tab. How many items (programs) have a box with check mark next to them? If more than 3, please list them one per line and we'll see what's taking up the RAM.

Canuck, did you want the whole line of each thing with a checked box, IE
CommCtr Registry (Per-User Run) C:\Progra~1\Net2PH~1
\ComCtr.EXE-auto

or just the name on the left side of the page? CommCtr

Just the name on the left hand side will do fine Kerry.

Hi Canuck, I found a few more than "3" items you mentioned, 34! Shocked

The items in parenthesis are what I know the name belongs to. If anything should be deleted will the programs still work and how will I access them? Funny thing Canuck, the older I get the more I realize how little I know. LOL

Scan Registry uncheck box
System Tray uncheck
Hot Key Kbd 9910 Daemon uncheck
ZipMagic uncheck
Igfx Tray uncheck
BCMDMMSG for modem, uncheck if you don't use modem
CARPService uncheck
HotKeys Cmds unless you use Hot Keys uncheck
TkBellExe uncheck
SSDPSRV uncheck
StillImageMonitor uncheck
SchedulingAgent uncheck
GoBack Polling Service if you're using Roxio's backup leave, if not uncheck
NkbMonitor.exe uncheck

You have Norton and AVG running, you should only have one antivirus program running, suggest you uninstall one or the other. If you're paid up with Norton, drop AVG, however AVG is free and uses a lot less space and memory. The ones I haven't mentioned leave checked. The answer is yes, you can access most of the programs from Start > Programs or if you want fast access to a particular one, create a short cut on the desktop. The above is what I'd do if this were my PC, however the decision to remove is up to you. One thing though, if you uncheck a program, you can always go back and check the box if needed.

After unchecking, >OK > reboot > configuration window will pop up, check box 'to not show window again' >OK.

Keep us posted, you should see your PC booting up a little faster after the first boot up.

Hi Canuck, I did the instructions and rebooted 7 times and Spybot kept denying the change. 8th time I went into Spybot and unchecked thethem there as well as into msconfig and rebooted. Still found them all in same place with same checks in boxes on both. Even tried shutting down Spybot, AVG and ZoneAlarm and unchecking then rebooting but still came back up with everything I had unchecked still checked.

Do you think it would help if I uninstalled Spybot and then tried it? Or??? Any other suggestions?
Frustrated and desperate.

Thanks,

Kerry

P.S. I dumped Norton several years ago when I got AVG then did a search and removed everything Norton so was surprised to find the name still on my CP.

Hi Kerry,

I'm really at a loss trying to figure out why they aren't deleteing. Let's try this, download ccleaner ( www'ccleaner.com ) if you haven't got it already. Open the program > Tools button > Startup button > Now highlight and delete each entry you want to stop. If that doesn't do the job, we'll have to think of something else.

Hi Canuck, I have CC and will try that but first I have completely uninstalled Spybot and Zone alarm and installed the newest versions. The new Spybot seems to be working better so I will try removing the checks you suggested earlier. First though I need to get away from my computer for a couple of days before I take a hammer to it. LOL

Don't close thread, I shall return in a couple days, with good news I hope.

Hi Canuck, Slept around the clock for a couple of days and can think clearly and feel almost human again. The new Spybot is working fine, evidently the old one was corrupt. Finally got the boxes unchecked with msconfig and got right on the net with a better speed but still not full speed. Plan to unload a whole bunch of files onto my external drive and maybe that will help. I read that removing seldom used fonts into a separate file can help speed up the computer too. Will put them all on floppies and get them as I want to use the more unusual and ornate fonts.

HJT still hangs up with (not responding) message.

Zone Alarm no longer supports Windows ME and I didn't see any Firewall recommended on your Page 17 list so I would appreciate any that you could suggest for my old computer. Laughing

Will be back after I finish the unloading of files and fonts and check with HJT site to see if there is a solution.

Thanks again and have a great weekend.

Kerry

Hi Canuck, Computer is working better now thanks to your instructions on what to remove in msconfig. I have been removing tons of files from "my documents" to my external hard drive. My dog, I didn't realize what a packrat I had become and how much garbage I had saved in files over the years "in case I wanted to use it SOMEDAY". LOL I still have a bunch to remove but the good news is, with every batch I remove my computer works better. Can connect to the internet at top dial-up speed almost every time and a whole lot fewer disconnects and freezes on or off line. Still can't get HJT to work so today I am going to see if I have a copy of the old one in my external backup files and try reinstalling that and see if it works. Will let you know also if I find anything on the net about it.

Found old copy of ZoneAlarm in my files to install today. Cannot update but it will be better than nothing until I can find a firewall that supports Win. ME.

Once again, my everlasting gratitude and appreciation for your expertise and kindness in sharing it.

Sincerely,

Kerry

P.S. Would you recommend the RegCure advertised on this site to use on Win.XP? Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Hi Kerry,

Glad to hear things are running faster now. As far as RegCure is concerned, to be honest, I haven't tried it. I know Osc has high standards for this forum, so if it's mentioned here, it should be OK. I personally avoid using Registry programs. In past experience, keys have been deleted that shouldn't have been and this has caused problems. You've really got to know what the keys belong to and which program(s) are relient on them. Also, a key takes up very little hard drive space to really make a big difference in operation. Stay tuned, others may have different opinions.

Thanks Canuck, I am usually leary when it comes to one fix fits all programs. Tried one once a few years ago when I was a newbie with my first computer and ended up having to do a reinstall. I no longer believe everything I read on the net. LOL Will check back though. I visit every once in a while to see what problems people are having and see how the H2go techs fix them then make copies to put in a H2go file in case I get the problem. Very Happy
