running ccleaner and superantispyware brought back the start menu and desktop, but i still can't get online, which presents a little problem when updating definitions. Also, i have to download the programs i need to run onto my computer and then transfer them via 256mb usb storage device and put them on the problematic computer.

If things seem to be running smoothly after you've updated and run avg etc, suggest you create a new "Restore Point" call it 'good restore' or something like that. If you're not having further problems, I wouldn't worry about posting a new HJT log. We have a shortage of spyware experts, as do many of the other sites, so you could be waitnig awhile for a response.

Glad you figured out the problem. Very Happy
