digital cameras

I am soon to be shopping for a new digital camera. Nothing too fancy or expensive. Anybody have any horror stories or better yet good recommendations as to what would suit a novice with a tight budget?

One thing to definitely look for is whether you want a traditional viewfinder or not. Many new cameras only have the LCD screen to look at when framing your photo - you should decide whether the old-style viewfinder is something you want.

That said, I got a Panasonic Lumix last summer, 7.2 megapixels, for under $100. I think it's a fantastic camera, and the videos it takes were better than my 3-year old camcorder! No standard viewfinder, which irritates my wife. Otherwise, zero complaints.

My wife has had 2 different Kodak EasyShares and she likes how easy they are to use but they eat batteries like there is no tomorrow.

Just in case you're not familiar with it, here's a great buying guide:

It allows you to indicate what features are important to you and will present cameras based on that.

I agree with an earlier post regarding the viewfinder! Even with the newest of the cameras, at least the ones I've seen, that can be an issue in bright sun! Also, it can be an issue if your eyes are more than about 45 years old! The arms just aren't long enough with out reading glasses! [Grin] :wink:

Sounds like a bargain to me, Bro Osc. I take it that was brand-new, retail price. I'm pretty dumb with these things but you say it takes video as well as still shots? How much video time is available? And last of all, where'd you get yours?

I bought mine at the local Best Buy - they had a sale one weekend so I ran in and picked it up.

Best Buy only seems to carry the 8MP and over cameras now. Here's the camera I bought, only I have the silver one:

I only tend to take short videos, a few minutes at a time, so I can't tell you if there's a limit. But you can keep taking videos as long as you have memory left on your card...
