I turned on my Dell and received the message C:\\windows\system32\config\system missing or corrupt.

Since I haven't backed up in a while Embarassed I really want to make sure I don't hurt the hard drive before I save my files. So I followed the directions in your article by Steamwiz on how to backup files from an unbootable computer. When I booted my pc using the Linux/Knoppix CD everything went as described in the article except I did not have an icon for my hard drive. I retried several times, always with the same result. I searched a little on the pc using Knoppix and saw a message that my hard drive had not been mounted.

Is this an indication that the hard disk has crashed? What should I do next?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me!

Is the hard drive recognised in BIOS? If not, try resetting CMOS. If you aren't comfortable opening the box and resetting the jumper, DON'T! Find someone that is. That's usually all it needs.

If after that your drive still isn't recognised, and all connections are in place, you may need to replace it. Can you install it in another computer as a slave and check to see if it can be accessed? If so, you should be able to resue files - if you need to.
