For those who prefer browsers other than Internet Explorer (so can't use ieSpell) there is another useful free spell checker called tinySpell.
Spelling is checked as you type. When a mistake is made, the tinySpell icon (which sits next to the clock) changes colour and 'dinging' sound is heard. Clicking on the icon then shows the correct spelling for the word. A small moveable Window can optionally be opened that displays the misspelled word in red type.
The program is a little limited in as much as it can't check an entire block of text like ieSpell can. However, it is good for correcting words singly. It does this by monitoring the clipboard. If a word is suspected to be misspelled within a block of text it can be checked by firstly highlighting it and then using 'Right click>Copy'. If the spelling is wrong the 'ding' is heard and the icon changes colour. No ding means all is well.
An advantage is that tinySpell works with any text editor such as Notepad, Wordpad, web editors, forum text entry boxes etc. It also works with any text that can be highlighted and copied (web pages for instance).
The program monitors typing and copying actions all the time. For this reason a 'Disable' option has been built into it. This prevents the 'dinging' noises from becoming annoying at times when spell checking is not required.
The utility comes with an American English dictionary (only) and is freeware. A donation is optional but there are no 'nag' screens.
tinySpell can be found at http://www.numerit.com/ (go to the last but one link in the left-hand menu).
It is quite useful I'd miss that 'dinging' noise if the spell checker wasn't running in the background all the time. I prefer the Mozilla Firebird browser so ieSpell isn't an option (I wish it was!). Nonetheless, I find tinySpell pretty good.
One thing that is perhaps worth a mention is that it picks up on all typed letters (but not numbers), so if any of your passwords are letters only and are not dictionary words, tinySpell picks up on them. It would then be possible to see an all letter password if the icon is clicked on. The word gets overwritten when:
1. The next spelling mistake is made.
2. When tinySpell is closed.
3. When the computer is switched off.
I suppose if your password was the only mistake tinySpell picked up on during a typing session then it would be possible to wander off and leave your password viewable to others.
I've never found this a disadvantage but it's as well to be aware that this is the case.
Just to avoid confusion. 'Guest' (above) is me, mart44 doing my first post. I must have forgotten to log on, or my registration hadn't gone through at the time of the post ...or something
