Got this info from one of my newsletters and thought I would share. Hopefully, this hasn't happened to none of you!

According to the FTC site, it received 215,000 complaints about
identity theft in 2003. In 2002, the number was 162,000, and in 2001,
86,000. So the problem is growing rapidly. If your identity has been stolen, or if your concerned and want to learn more the FTC has much guidance on what to do.

Learn more about it here:

When you consider that there is probably 2 billion people on the net the ID theft figures are quite small.
The best safeguard to ID theft on the net is change your passwords often.
With theft of email addresses , well they are not actually theft but unauthorized use of your identity. A good firewall, regualrly scanning for spyware and regular virus scanning can minimize the probability of anyone stealing you id.
Yahoo offer a service where you get a temp email address, use it for whatever purpose then discard it.
One method used by ID theives is getting you to resond to an email. If you get one that angers you DO NOT reply to it.
Also ignore the OPT OUT that is included in just about every spam. this is another ploy to get hold of a valid email address
