Hi folks,

I'm going to try to sit down and rewrite the sticky that sits on top of the Q&A Forums, explaining what to do if you have a spyware or hijack problem. ANy comments, additions, clarifications are welcome!

Most of the post will be taken directly from steamwiz's articles and posts.

***DRAFT***

Sticky: What to do if your browser has been hijacked or if you have spyware

Spyware and browser hijackers can take many forms. Is can be a very confusing process to eliminate the offending software, but the time it will take to fix the problems can be shortened a great deal if you follow these steps BEFORE posting your question.

Step 1: Click Start | Programs | Windows Update. Download and install all critical updates. Reboot.

Step 2: Click Start | Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs. Remove any programs that are named similar to "New.Net", "Save" (also known as "WhenuSave" and "SaveNow"), or "Web 3000". Reboot.

Step 3: Download and run CWShredder

If you get an error stating 'A required dll, MSVBVM60.DLL, was not found' then download and install the Microsoft Visual Basic 6 runtime libraries

Step 4: Download and install Spybot Search and Destroy. This is like an anti-virus program, except that it checks for spyware instead of viruses. Once you start the program, always check for updates before running the scan.

When the scan is complete, remove any checked entries. Next, click the immunize button, and while you're there (at this page) you can lock your homepage if you want to. As with an anti-virus program - check for updates at least once a week and run the scanner frequently. Reboot one more time.

Step 5: Download Hijackthis. Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

After the scan has finished the "scan" button will turn into a "save log" button. Save the log file. Create a new topic in the Q&A forums and paste the log within. Do not delete anything yet, as most things hijackthis finds are harmless and needed. (click here if you are having trouble cutting/pasting the log file into a new topic)

***END DRAFT***

Osc, just another step to save our time as well.

Download and run CWShredder

If you get an error stating 'A required dll, MSVBVM60.DLL, was not found' then download and install the Microsoft Visual Basic 6 runtime libraries
