Default How to open an unknown file format

For help if you get an error message saying that a file format cannot be opened, I came across a helpful site called Openwith.org :

Free programs to open any file extension!

To use Openwith you’ll need the file’s suffix – the code of three or letters at the end of the file name. If it’s not visible, right click on the file and choose Properties. Copy or make a note of the suffix and put it into the search box on Openwith which will identify the file type and also include download links to free programs that will let you open, read and edit the file.

Note : The usual precautions apply - exercise caution when opening unknown files or attachments unless you know and trust the sender. Ditto for free programs - check here first at H2G if unsure.
