New Avast 5
Avast Anti-virus has updated to version 5 - new interface, faster, looks to be well-worth getting (especially since it's free!)

I have only just updated to Avast Anti-virus version 5.0 -
For other members that choose to update, it was an uneventful download and installation over the top of the version 4.8. No problems at all.
I could not find any information telling me to uninstall ver:4.8 first, so went ahead as above with success after being asked to reboot immediately.
kind regards,

Thank you for this information. I was concerned about having to uninstall former program version of 4.8 before installing new updated version. As posted by tallin:

I have succeeded in installing the new updated version of Avast 5.0 into my Vista and into our daughters XP without incident by selecting the custom install.
I would also like to add that the restart option was checked, though there was also an option to restart later that included the following warning:
If you do not restart your computer, some components will not run correctly or may cause system failure.
I am assuming that a complete restart is required for the program to activate to full potential. And this should be pointed out to our users.I am currently taking a degree in Malware Removal, and during this time, it is not appropriate for me to offer any assistance in the analysis of or the removal of Malware. Thank you for understanding.

I am glad you had success with your installation Donna.....thanks for the heads up too.
An update on my other system, a Laptop also running Windows XP/SP3 - same success as my PC reported earlier. The only difference I can see visually is an orange revolving icon in my systems tray when before it was a blue one.
Oh and a ladies voice announcing the updates instead of a man...
Yes, I know I can turn that off, but I like it there as it gives me confidence.
