Disk drive not found in device manager

Fellas,
Its been a while (good thing), but I'm stuck again. My laptop disk drive is acting funny. It isnt recognized in "my computer" or device manager at all. However, it still opens and closes like normal, spins the disk, but just doesnt read anything or reflect that the computer even has a disk drive. Not sure what direction to go in now...

it could be a number of things, but the first thing i would try is to reseat the drive, as is sounds like its come loose.

THIS PAGE has an excellent step by step instruction on how to do this.

mr. darn, thanks for the reply. i tried your suggestion, i took out the drive, blew it out with an aircan and reset the drive. unfortunately, it didnt improve the situation. the drive is still not even shown by the computer anywhere. dead drive?

it could quite possibly be, but before you spend any cash, lets see if windows will detect it.

remove the drive again, and with it removed, boot your computer.

shut down the computer as normal, then re-insert the drive, ensuring it is slotted in correctly as before.

restart the computer, and see if a 'found new hardware' wizard appears.

let us know how you get on.

i did as you suggested, removed the drive and restarted it, replaced the drive and restarted and nothing was found or detected. dead drive? thanks for your help mr. darn
