    Default MS update problem

    Hello all

I run XP SP2 on our 3 machines. We use Firefox and have MS auto updates turned off.

Each patch Tuesday (and other times if anything is released) I use IE to go to MS's windows update site, let MS scan/detect necessary updates and select those I want.

I hear that this month's patch Tuesday contained a huge volume of XP system updates, some classified as critical.

When MS scanned my PC it only recommended I install XP SP3. That's all. Nothing else.

Any ideas why MS updates don't offer me anything else when there's so much (apparently) I need to update? It is now compulsory for me to install SP3 or I don't get other updates?

    Hi OJ,

Seems to be working OK for us. What happens if you re-enable Auto update with notification before download? OK, not desirable, but may prove a point. It's likely you'll get SP3 in the list, but you can just deselect and ask not to be told again. Works for us.

Considering the history of SP3, I can't imagine MS would choose to force it on the market. The phrase 'melt down' comes to mind.
