Default Need driver: RS232 device thru USB 2.0 port

I have an IBM Thinkpad with xP SP2 and USB 2.0 ports. I want to connect to a RS232 input electronic device. I have a cable to make the connection, but it doesn't let me talk to the device. I think that driver software is needed. Anybody know about this?

What does the device actually do? I have used RS232 test equipment but not on a pc, the tester was connected between a modem and an automated machine, used to detect for correct signals, Data Set ready, clear to send, Data terminal Ready, ect... I did find an interesting link------> ByteWedge - Acquire data from electronic devices through an RS232 interface and input it directly into your database, whether it is MS Access, MySQL or any other ODBC-compliant database..

That's about all the knowledge I have on it, if we new what the device does it may help to search for a better answer.
