Default Vista won't boot or reinstall on Dell laptop?

    Hi!

I'm a computer dope, so I apologize in advance for any annoying rookie questions/comments.

My daughter has a Dell Inspiron 1721 with Vista Home Premium 32 bit.

The hard drive was bad and replaced about 1 month ago.

Last night, her laptop stopped booting. Startup repair won't fix it.

I've gone into safe mode, none of the options there worked.

I've booted from the DVD, and repair still doesn't work.

I've tried to reinstall Vista, it gives me error code 0x80070017 (?)

I've tried a couple of command prompts to correct(?) the boot issues. The computer said the tasks were completed successfully, but still nothing works.

In the Pre-boot System Assessment, I got error code 0142 - unit 1 - drive self test failed.

Uh, will someone please take mercy on me, and try to help guide me through this?

    Thanks so much!

    Default :^(

    No, I have not.

I was hoping to avoid Dell tech support. They crushed my soul this year once already! The same laptop had a bad hard drive, it took them 4 weeks to get the part.

I ran a lot of diagnostics on it last night, and should now have the problem down narrowed enough to survive an experience with tech Satan. Thank you for responding and posting the link! I appreciate it.
