Default Problem Accessing DVD-ROM Music CD

Hi all,

I've had this problem for a while with my Vista SP 2 laptop, when I insert a Music CD in the DVD-ROM drive nothing happens (regardless of what I tell it to do under autoplay options via the start bar). I seem to have lost the auto play pop-up when I insert a disc or right click on the drive icon under my computer and this also applies to my WD Passport (250 GB USB HDD). But I still have auto play options when I insert USB keys. Any ideas how to get the auto play options back for the items where it's missing?

Also, When I then double click on the DVD-ROM icon in my computer for a music cd, it gives me the error message:

"Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access this item".

I am an administrator on my account and have tried other accounts and get the same problem. I believe in the past when I loaded a cd in the drive I got i-tunes to come up but I didn't like that so turned it off in autoplay. Now regardless of what I do I get nothing and that error message.

Any ideas?

Have you tried right-clicking the icon in 'computer' (what used to be My Computer in XP) and selecting play?

I suspect this will get the same result, but worth a try before trying more complex options.

Does any other media play ok? other CD's, DVD's etc?

Another option may be to open Windows Media Player, then press the [Alt] key once to display the other options along the top of the player, select File then Open then navigate to the drive.

Let me know how you get on...

Hi Mr Darn,

Yeah I get the same result when right clicking and selecting play.

After doing some futher testing, it seems I have lost the auto play option for my Western Digital Passport (250 GB USB HDD) and my CD-ROM drive for my laptop account. However when I login to someone elses account who is an Administrator, they have the autoplay option fine when I right click on either or insert a CD (I will revise what I said above).

It seems for my account that auto play features are gone for 2 items under my computer. Any ideas how to get them back? I get the same error message also regardless but can explore the CD and play them that way.

I'm sorry, i dont have any further ideas without more research, but before i do that, is the option of creating a new account and transferring all your files to this account, before deleting the troublesome account an option?

Kind of a big task and I am always using it for work at the moment. I'll ask around for some help but any ideas at all on how to get this auto-play back working when I insert a music disc would be great. Thanks.
