    Default sound problems

    i just reinstalled windows xp OP SYSTEM .when i try to play a movie or a cd i dont here a sound .when i try to play windows media player i get thgis message :"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your computer, it may be in use by another program, or it may not be functioning properly."

    As you've just reinstalled the o/s your drivers are probably not up-to-date. Go to the various manufacturer's sites and update (do not use the Microsoft driver updates for third party hardware, more often than not, they aren't updated.) What format is the file you're tring to play? You may need to install a codec for it.
