Default computer slows down; they talk about registry

My older SONY is terribly slow, and freezes up quite often. Internet messages talk about "cleaning up Registry"-- what is it; most sites are trying to SELL me something or other. I am afreaid of 'inviting' some form of Virus. I have recently purchased & loaded Kaspersky 2010.

Now I find similar trouble in my new HP computer as well.

Will a knowlegeable "friend" give me a helping hand, to get me out of thuis trouble ?

    Thanks a million

    Hi chari,

A couple of things we can do here. First, download, install and run Ccleaner . This is a free, safe and recommended program that gets rid of temporary files, cookies etc. There is also included with Ccleaner a Registry cleaner, we strongly urge you not to use registry cleaners unless you are very knowledgeable (most of us are not). These registry cleaners, no matter who makes them can cause more problems than they're worth, and besides, registry files take up such a small amount of space very little if anything is gained.

When the file has been saved, go to your Desktop and double-click on ccsetupxxx_slim.exe
Follow the prompts to install the program.
    Complete the installation then:
    • Double-click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
    • Click on the Options block on the left, then choose Cookies.
o Under Cookies to Delete highlight any cookies you would like to retain permanently
o Click the right arrow > to move them to the Cookies to Keep window.

    • Go into Options > Advanced uncheck Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours
    • Click Cleaner on the left then Run Cleaner on the right to run the program.
Important: Make sure that ALL browser windows are closed before selecting Run Cleaner
Caution: It is not recommended that you use the 'Registry' feature unless you are very familiar with the registry.
    • Exit CCleaner
after it has completed its process.

    Compliments of Evilfantasy.
Another area that can slow a computer down is the number of programs running in the background. You will notice all the little icons in the toolbar next to the clock (usually bottom right on your screen), these are just a few. If you go to Start > Run > type in msconfig > OK, select the startup tab, you'll see most of the programs running as soon as you turn on your computer. Most of these are using up your RAM (memory) which then slows down the PC. With the exception of an anti-virus program (you should only have one a/v program), a firewall, touchpad (for laptops) there are very few other programs that are needed to be running.

If you wish, you can post a Highjackthis log to this thread and we can advise on what is necessary and what is not.

Internet messages about "registry cleaners" are scams. Do not click on those - just close them.

    Default computer slow down

Hello: relative to the reply posted by:Canuck: I followed your directions: downloaded ccleaner.com, ran that to cleanup I did NOT use the "registry cleaner" following your advice. Then I ran msconfig, and below are the items found under "startup" tab:--
qttast Pop3trap server webtrap NT realsched Reader_sl
Search Protection pets tray Spyware Terminator avp Search Protection msmsgs VAIO Action Setup Microsoft Office Adobe Gamma loa...

PLEASE do advise me, at your convenience, what is the next thing I must do. THANKS.

After this problem on my Old SONY is solved, I may give the details on the New HP to indicate what programs are running at Start Up.....to receive your advice.

Thanks again. Chari Sunday 1 Feb 2009 5:27 PM EST

If you would run the Highjackthis program and copy and paste the log to this thread, it would be better for me to give advice.

Default my XP onmy SONY slows down... your advice of Jan 29th

I am now at the Sony. I have successfully downloaded HiJack etc and was able to see the list that it generated. I think it is in my Notepad or Desktop. Please indicate How do I take what is on my computer to send it to you to enable you to analyse and then indicate the next step I should take.

Even as I started, the computer 'froze' up a couple of times and I had to wait.

thanks. chari 2 Feb 2010 9:54 AM EST

I've corrected the link in Canuck's post. The correct link to the tutorial is also here.

Full instructions on how to post your HiJackThis log are explained there.

If you haven't defragmented your computers for awhile, do so. There is a built in defrager in windows > accessories > system tools. However there are better 3rd party defraggers that are free. My Defrag and Defraggler are rated very highly, they both do a good job, Defraggler is a bit faster though.
