Default E machine new hard drive?

I picked up a new hard drive for my E machine T 6420
and when installed it will not boot
    It says open cable
Also it's not detecting the new drive
Is there something I have to do in the bios settings ?

    Thank you
    Brad

E Machines take proprietary hardware, that means, that most if not all add ons or replacements have to be bought through E Machines. The model you refer to has had a lot of problems with its motherboard (not saying yours has the same). I would suggest that you look into buying a better PC than putting money into an e machine.
Others I'm sure will give you the benefit of their take on this.

    I hate this proprietary thing.

why don't you take your computer to you supplier and let them replace you hdd... warranty is what i am thinking and of course compatibility.

Why did you buy a new HD? Was it to replace the existing drive or as a second drive? If it was to replace the old drive, was there a problem with it? Would it boot with the old drive?
