    Default Battery

    Hello

I know this might sound stupid but my battery indicator is showing a red X.

Now I know this might appear a stupid question but does anyone think my battery has reached the end of its life.

I use my laptop every day (practically a desktop)!!!!and its plugged into the power supply all day with the battery still in, I checked on the internet and found out that a laptop can be used with out the battery in as long as i am plugged into a power supply, lol!!!!! after all these years I never knew that.

My question is can I use my acer 5720 aspire laptop without the battery (whilst I await delivery of a new one) as long as I am plugged into the mains and is it really safe to use my laptop with out the battery in once i get the new one and use it say once a month on battery only to help prolong the life of the new battery

I have had my laptop over 3 years now with the same battery as when i bought the laptop.

    Kind Regards
    Tony

    Hi knight1,

Definately, not a stupid question! I abuse my laptop battery as well. It is actually good to take the battery out if you plan on keeping it plugged in most of the time. It will prolong the life of your battery.

Here's a link that will explain. Proper Laptop Battery Care

The X on my laptop shows up only when the battery is ready to die out completely. I then plug in to recharge.

    Edit:
Some sure fire ways to tell if your battery is dead is to see if your laptop will boot up without the AC adapter. Or, does it run on battery for an extended amount of time.

Just found this > Documentation: Laptop battery charge gauge
