    Default HP A1130N Memory Upgrade

    Hello,

I would like to upgrade the RAM on my HP A1130N. Currently it has 1 GB (2 x 512 MB removable) of memory. I have purchased 2 GB (2 x 1 GB) of memory and I would like to know if I can just add the new memory to the empty bank. This computer has two banks each with two sockets and can be upgraded to up to 4 GB.

Also, it's been a while since I've done this, should I update the BIOS first? If so, how do I go about doing this?

    Your help is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Melissa

You can just replace the old with the new. It's advisable to disconnect from mains and remove/disconnect the battery whilst doing so. The RAM should be recognised and work fine without needing to update the BIOS, which should only be done if there are related problems.

    Thanks for your quick reply.

Just one more question, can I keep the old memory in the second bank, so instead of just having the new 2 GB of memory it would have 3 GB (2 x 1 GB NEW & 2 x 512 MB Old)?

    Thanks again,
    Melissa

It's certainly possible, but try just the 2 x 1Gb first. Some machines don't like different sizes of RAM fitted, but you'll only find that out when you fit them. If there is a problem, you can always remove them again.
