Default Printer problem - Canon IP2600

My Canon Pixma iP2600 printer has suddenly started having problems and I'd be grateful for some advice.

Normally when you go to print the cartridges slide back and forth a bit until it's ready (it's quite slow to warm up and get going). Since yesterday, when I go to print they just make a clunking sound and don't move, the green and orange lights start to flash alternately and I get a 5201 error code. The printer manual says when the lights are flashing alternately to just switch the printer off, then back on again to clear the problem, but that doesn't work. I looked up the error code and found a suggestion it could be a faulty registry entry, so I uninstalled the printer completely using Revo followed by RegSeeker, restarted the computer and then re-installed the printer. No joy - still the same problem.

I've been using compatible cartridges which have been fine and have worked well.

Any ideas please or should I replace it?

    Thank you.

I can't find any more information then you did. Is that a 49.00 dollar printer?

Consider getting away from cartridge type printers too.

It really seems like a mechanical type issue to me.

    I agree with Zep here,

Have a look inside the printer with the power off. The cartrages *should* slide smoothly along the track. My guess is something has dropped inside and is jamming it.

The amount of paperclips i've removed from printers!

    Hiya, thanks for replying

@zep No, it wasn't an expensive printer, I think I paid about 45 but I like Canon and it's simple enough for my present needs. I do agree with you about cartridge printers though and I will be changing in due course when I upgrade my whole setup.

@ Mr Darn - good thinking, so I had a really good look inside the printer and felt all along the track but I couldn't see anything jamming it. The only question I have now is : how do you get printer ink off your fingers?

Thank you both for your help, looks like I'm off to buy a new printer tomorrow.

RE: Removing Permanent Ink from Skin

Try Clorox 2 (not as dangerous as bleach) and scrub lightly with the backside of one of those sponges with a scruffy side. Worked great on ink from an ink jet cartridge

Bleach is better but strong on the skin...so rinse skin with running water

Hi abseh1 - thanks for the advice - bleach did the job!

And happily, the faulty printer turned out to be still under guarantee, so it was replaced free of charge, which pleased me mightily

    Nothing better than that!

Did you think to remove your cartrages before you sent it in?

i did that once and kept the "supplied" ones for when they ran out as an extra freebe!

@abseh1 Please tell Mrs Abseh1 that I followed her advice and my hands are now as soft as a baby's ......

@ Mr Darn I did remove the cartridges but the replacement printer uses different ones - annoying as they were only a couple of weeks old.

Thanks for all the advice - including household tips!
