    Default Missing DVD drive

A friend has turned to me for help. He has an Acer touch screen PC running Windows 7. Recently he ran a DVD which was listed as suitable for region 1. Now his DVD drive has disappeared. I have checked the device manager and the device is listed with the dreaded yello exclamation mark by it. I searched the web and, on the advice offered, reinstalled the driver. This has had no effect. Other suggestions offered are confusing and I am feeling way out of my depth. Can anyone on H2G offer any suggestios?

    Hi RDL, try this...

Click here http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts/xp_cd_dvd_fix.vbs, and download the file to your desktop. Then double click it, confirm addition to the registry, and restart the computer.

If no joy, I suggest you work your way through the suggestions here.

My blessings on you and you house. I have scoured the net as I said but to little avail. I have forwarded the links to his computer and we will work our way through them next time I see him later this week and let you know what happens. The main priority is to sort things out before we open the wine . Thanks again old buddy.

I've always found it better to open the wine first!

Good morning arraknid. I went to see my friend only to find he had "tried" all the suggestions and finally called a technician in. The DVD drive sort of works now if he presses f8 on booting up. With all the reserve we Brits are supposed to be famous for I said "OK" and we opened the wine and enjoyed a thoroughly good evening without a computer in sight. Thanks again for your help. Keep well
