Browser won't work on Macbook

I know a fair amount about PCs, but nothing about Macs. We bought a Mac for my wife, cause we thought it would be easier for her to use,but when something goes wrong, i'm helpless..

Her Safari browser stopped working today - it uses wireless and my phone and laptop in the same room say the wireless signal is fine - Her's even says the internet connection is fine - sarari won't bring up any page, though.
I figured it might be a corrupt broswer, and was gonna download another, but to my dismay, it looks to me like Safari was the only browser on her machine, so i couldn't try another browser OR download another.
I went to my PC and downloaded firefox onto a cd and copied it onto her computer and got it to install.
now I can get firefox to bring up a page ONLY by turning off "Airport" and turning it back on. It will then connect to a page and sometimes even let me click links on the page and go to new pages, but if i type a new url in the bar, it won't connect.

any ideas?
