Default Files copied to disc from a Windows XP computer "disappear" in other Windows environs

Before returning my laptop to the employer that laid me off, I copied some private documents (like my resume) onto discs. The documents had been created in a Windows XP environment. After creating the discs I checked that the content was there. But when I try to retrieve the documents on my new laptop (with Windows 7 Home Edition), the discs read as empty. Does anyone have any advice for how I can get these documents back?

You will need the same or compatible word processing program as the one that created it. Another thing to take into consideration is that not all programs that worked in XP will work in Windows 7. Suggest you try the disk in an XP machine and see if it's detected. There are some programs out there that can restore deleted files eg Recuva.
