Default cd / dvd drive missing

Have a Sony Vaio with Win7 SP1 home prem 64 bit that got a new hard drive in March. Since then I have no cd / dvd drive even though win7 was installed from dvd. Have deleted the cd/dvd hardware in windows device manager. On reboot it's reinstalled but still is not accessible in explorer. My HJT log shows several 'file missing' entries that I am guessing are related to cd/dvd drive. How do I get my cd/dvd drive back?

Thats the dangerous thing about an untrained person using tools like HijackThis without help. those entries are more likely to be something else entirely, and are not necessarily missing!

Is the Vaio a laptop? (im unsure if the range includes desktops)

did the cd drive work fine before the hard disk problem?

does the tray open at all?

try updating the driver via device manager. it may be running on the basic I/O driver loaded when the BIOS loads, allowing it to run as a boot device, but not show in windows.

could we see a copy of the HijackThis log please? normally we don't accept them here in computer help, but we'll allow it in this instance.
    Always remember you're unique.

    ...Just like everyone else!
If your problem is solved, here's how to say thanks!

Yes it's a laptop. The drive worked fine before the new hard drive was installed. The system will still boot from the drive. I have updated all the drivers for the cd drive but that did not help. I did find something once about a high and low filter conflict in the registry. Here's the HJT log:

Jumping in for a brief moment if I may.

Thats the dangerous thing about an untrained person using tools like HijackThis without help. those entries are more likely to be something else entirely, and are not necessarily missing!
    Excellent acknowledgement MrD!

My HJT log shows several 'file missing' entries that I am guessing are related to cd/dvd drive.
Please be aware that on a 64bit computer, HJT does not see nor comprehend "some" O9's and O23's, so it reports the files as "missing" because HJT is a 32-bit program.

Since 64-bit and 32-bit code don't mix, to keep the two separate, windows makes use of an emulator called WOW64 (Windows On Windows 64) which redirects all 32-bit requests to a special folder. In order for the 32-bit programs to run in the 64-bit environment, they have to be running within that emulator and all calls get redirected to the SysWOW64 folder (where 32-bit support files are kept).

In fact, since HJT is a 32-bit program it doesn't have access to 64-bit locations and the report can be misleading. That's is why we stress that it is best to have trained professional to interpret the diagnostic logs as it can lead you to making wrong decisions.

Well the entry i thought may be in that HijackThis report wasnt there, so i'm guessing it is a registry corruption as you have rightly pointed out.

The information you need is in this article:

Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs

Be careful using HijackThis. it could cause you lots of problems!
In fact, i'd recommend deleting it, until asked for again by a trained helper. Its really that dangerous in untrained hands.
    Always remember you're unique.

If Mr Darn's link does not repair it via the filters

    Try the following;
    (applies to Win7)
Open the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Control Panel.
In the search box, type troubleshooter, and then click Troubleshooting. Under Hardware and Sound, click Configure a device.*
If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

The link below is Sony specific....and Windows 7 Enterprise
(not many have that business OS version)
After you install Windows 7 on your computer, you cannot access the DVD drive, or you can only intermittently access the DVD drive.

This problem may occur if you use one of the following DVD drives on the computer:
    • Sony BC-5100S DVD
    • Sony BC-5600S DVD
    • TSST TS-L633B DVD+/-RW

Note: If you cannot find a firmware update, disable the Adaptive Link Power Management (ALPM) feature on the computer. To do this, follow these steps.
Note ALPM is a feature that puts a hardware device into sleep state after 100 ms of idle time. This is a power-saving feature. After you disable ALPM, you can still configure the drive to run in any one of three power plans: Performance, Balanced, and Power Saver. However, you cannot still benefit from the additional power saving that is provided by ALPM.
