Default Windows Update doesn't work anymore - error 80070005 - win 7 family premium

    Hi everyone,

Proud owner of a MSI GT780R, Windows Update doesn't work anymore, whether for automatic updates or manual checking.

    Please see screenshot:

"An error has occurred while trying to look for updates for your computer"

" error 80070005 - Windows Update encountered an unknown error"

This message appeared some time around mid-June (Haven't use my computer in a few weeks), and I haven't done anything special to trigger this error, or to solve it.

Can you assist me with this, please ? I'm worried this could leave security breaches on my computer.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Tipiak,

    Welcome to Help2Go!

The error code 80070005 is an Access Denied message, and can be caused by anti-virus software that is preventing Windows Update from overwriting the file.

Disable all your AV/malware protection software you have installed, list them here, and then re-try Windows Update. Please don't surf on the Internet too much while all that lot is disabled since you will be unprotected.

You can also try the Windows update repair tool:How do I reset Windows Update components?

    Thanks for your feedback.

    So, in order

    - I deactivated my antivirus properly (Antivira Free Edition ) and tried to update. No change, same error message.

    - While still leaving the antivirus deactivated, I downloaded Microsoft FixIt, and ran it. While it detects Windows Update is not properly working, and states it repaired it, the error message is still there.

I rebooted and rebooted and even tried FixIt in windows safe mode, still no change unfortunately.

    Hello,

    You can also try this.

    Stop the Windows Update service.
    Rename the folder c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution
    Create new folder c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution
    Restart Windows Update service.

Have you been infected lately with any type of trojan or malware lately?
Please Double click your time in the bottom right hand corner of your taskbar and make sure it is set to the right date.
Are you logged in as Administrator?

Please download Farbar Service Scanner and run it on the computer with the issue.
    • Make sure the following options are checked:
      • Internet Services
      • Windows Firewall
      • System Restore
      • Security Center
    • Press "Scan".
    • It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
    • Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

Hey ! I'm back from a few days of holidays.

I tried this trick, and it worked right away ! Windows Update could reach the MS source again, and then it proceeded with downloading 33 updates, most of them of "important / critical" status.

So thank you very much indeed !

Regarding malwares, I don't think so, because I had followed Help2go procedure regarding malwares, and scanned with MalwareByte and such, and they found nothing.
