Default Can't open .psd photo files

I have a load of photos that were scanned using Adobe Photoshop (all .psd files). I don't have this program on my computer so I can't open them - does anyone know of a free alternative that would allow me to view and print them (and perhaps even edit them?) I presently use Photoscape as free simple editing software but it won't open these .psd files.

Alternatively, would it be possible to change the file ending to either a .tif or .jpeg and if so, how? They were professionally scanned and are large files so they can be enlarged for printing without loss of resolution.

I do have an old disk (free with a computer magazine ages ago, I think) of Adobe Photoshop Elements but I uninstalled it ages ago and I'm loath to reinstall it as it's so old it's probably a security risk - unless someone more experienced thinks otherwise?

    Thank you.

    Steph

Hi Canuck, thanks for replying so promptly.

I downloaded Irfanview from your link but the same message comes up when I try to open any of the photos : Windows cannot open this file. To open this file Windows needs to know which program created it ... etc etc.

    Any other ideas?

Hi Steph, sorry for the confusion, Infranview has had it's problems (as I understand it). Uninstall Infranview and try Zep's solution .. it looks like an easier way of going about converting.

Photos now viewable, phew - thank you gentlemen

Joe - the viewer is great, very simple to install. As it's simply a viewer though, if I want to edit the photos I have to use a photo editing program but Photoscape won't open them. Not sure why - any suggestions?

    Many thanks asoonernurse

GIMP was one of the options in the first link Canuck posted but when I took a look at the link you posted I saw the developers have recently put the following information on the site:

It's been a long time since we last had an active Windows-based developer. Consequently, GIMP has accumulated a plethora of bugs specific for that operating system. As much as we'd like to provide a smooth user experience for Windows users, we simply do not have the required human resources.

Sooo - a bit nervous of downloading it - buggy as in not working properly is annoying but manageable, buggy as in causing other computer problems or crashes - not manageable (at least by me)!

It may not be a problem of course, but if anyone has any comments re: experiences with this program, or could suggest an alternative, I'd be really grateful.

    Thank you.

Sorry. Must have missed that. Still early here in California. :-)

I have used GIMP on my Toshiba Satellite P-775D-S3760 for years with no undue effects. But if you are worried, there are plenty of other editing programs out there that can easily handle pngs.

Pixlr - an online photo editor, it has great filters and user friendly interface.

    ImageMagick easily handles PNGs.

But if you're looking for free software with the look-and-feel of Photoshop, try GIMPshop.

    Regards,

    Michael

If you can find the disk then that may be the way to go for now, I can't see it being that much of a security risk and I don't believe it connects to the Internet anyway.
