did but it said that a file was corrupt when I tried to install it. I have now downloaded it normally and it worked. Windows updates are still failing though

OK. Are you getting any associated error message concerning Windows Up-Date?

Lets head off to the Microsoft site and run the "Fixit" from the link below and see what results are produced if any by running the Fixit routine , I'm thinking this will restart the windows up-date service and re-register associated windows up date dll's. Here is link for you below,

If I try from the little yellow shield in my systen tray it just says failed. If I try from the updater website, it loads some software onto my PC and then says that I need to re-boot....then I go back to the website and the same thing happens.

Fis it says that it has failed to load my powershield

    Hi,

Ok. Run the Fixit in the above link Post # 12. And:

    Have you ever run chkdsk?

If not, I would run it.

Fix it says that it has failed to load my powershield

I've not run chkdsk for a while but last time I did, I had to manually unset the dirty bit

    Hi,

Yeah! I remember and I think that was me working with you. I can't stop thinking about the hard drive now and wonder if it's causing issues.......

    failed to load my powershield
I don't know what that means.

Since you have received errors & warnings on this hard drive, it's logical to think about replacement of the drive and then address any left over issue if any.

I'm not sure how to do it. I will include a link to show how it can be done, but I have no direct experience doing it.

How to Reinstall Windows XP without CD

Do you have access to E Bay? You can find an XP CD there for very cheap I would think, anyway take a look at the link above see what you think. Others may reply to this question too.

Cool....the other option I believe is an upgrade to windoze 8 for 15 or something but I may have to get xp working before i can do that.

otherwise, can't i just borrow an xp disk and use my own licence key?

will i also need drivers for the motherboard etc?
