Default Please help? My HP DV6500 won't let me do System Recovery

I have a HP Pavilion DV6500 laptop running Windows Vista, I want to wipe clean my laptop to factory settings (through system recovery).

I tried just about everything, from doing research on what people say about my problem, but none seem to work, and it is very hard to contact people to get a one on one. I did the most basic one by pressing f11 but it won't do anything. It just goes straight to the Windows Start up and loads as if you just restarted it. It happens every single time. It happens with the in Windows setup as well.

Also for my sound, it stats that "No Audio Output Device is Installed" I did all my research and tried every recommendation and even tried installing drivers, but no go. Currently I just installed one of my Recording Pre-amps external devices and that seems to work just fine, I am using that for the mean time. But I really would like my Internal Audio to work (as it is a hassle to lug around such device).

    Please any ideas or advice?

I don't have any recovery disk and/or back up files.

    Thanks in advance.

P.S. My warranty has been expired since 2008.

    Hi

    Welcome to Help2Go

Have you tried a System Restore to a time before the audio problem occurred?

    Next

Please download MiniToolBox http://download.bleepingcomputer.com...iniToolBox.exe and run it.

    Checkmark following boxes:

    • List last 10 Event Viewer log
    • List Installed Programs
    • List Users, Partitions and Memory size

Click Go and post the result.

Hey zep516, thanks for the welcoming.

I tried to do System Restore as well but the last time the laptop was used was a long while ago (1-2 years ago?/Possibly 3?).
So the last update that shows is the time I started up the laptop, which was just a few days ago. No other dates appeared from then, except Dec. 2012 and forward.

As for the MiniToolBox, I will do that just in a bit and post it when it is done.

    Thanks for helping!

    First things first,
Have you updated with windows up dates? You need to do that if you have not up dated.

Is your Norton Anti Virus subscription current and working?

Does the device Manager have any errors? Do you know how to look?
First you’ll need to open Device Manager. The easiest way is to just type device manager into the start menu search box, but you could also go through the control panel if you choose.

The drivers you downloaded, did you get them from the HP Site?

This is also a known issue possibly caused by windows up date just so you know.

Yes I have, just recently did that a few days ago and as of now there are no available updates.

Is your Norton Anti Virus subscription current and working?
No it is not. The subscription is already over and done with. I tried uninstalling that program as well just to clear up room but it gives me an error and says it cannot be removed for some reason.

I actually don't know how to check for errors. But I did use Device Manager for my Audio, as that's what people recommended I should do to check for Sound, but that was a no go as well. It didn't show up for what I was supposed to be looking for on that list.

The drivers you downloaded, did you get them from the HP Site?
Yes they are. I entered my S/N and my P/N and it did a search for me, as to which needed to be updated or needed.

This is also a know issue possibly caused by windows up date just so you know.
Sadly I know, I read that from most of the sites I did research on.

You can't run a computer on the internet without an Anti virus, some of your other programs are out dated as well and will need up dated. If you intend to use this computer lets get it up dated, install a free Anti Virus etc. Then we can address the sound issue.

Lets download a free Anti Virus, just download it. Don't click the set up file to install just yet.

    Free Anti Virus--->http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/w...tials-download

Now we need to remove Norton using a special tool, located in the link below.

I have Norton AntiVirus, Norton Internet Security, or Norton 360 <---------That is the version as far as I can tell the you have installed

    https://www-secure.symantec.com/nort...s&product=home

Run the Norton removal tool above, once Norton is removed go back to the desktop and double click that file you downloaded to install Microsoft Security Essentials, we will use that for now. You can select your own choice later if you wanted.

Lets just do that for now, then we will up date Adobe, java, and things like that.

I need to sign off for now and see you tomorrow.

    Hi,

Old versions of Java are an infection risk,

Please go to > control panel >Programs & Features remove the old Java versions listed:

    • Java Auto Updater (Version: 2.0.2.4)
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 21 (Version: 6.0.210)
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 5 (Version: 1.6.0.50)
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 7 (Version: 1.6.0.70)
    • Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 (Version: 1.6.0.0)

    Next

Install a new Java version from here-->java.com: Java + You

    After that

We will run a Hijackthis scan to take a look at the computer. Instructions below for doing that. this will give us a better idea about the computer,

Download HijackThis from here http://sourceforge.net/projects/hjt/ to the Desktop.
    • Double-click on HJTInstall.
    • Click on the Install button.
    • It will automatically place HJT in C:\Program Files\TrendMicro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe.
    • Upon install, HijackThis should open for you.
    • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button
    • HijackThis will scan and then a log will open in notepad.
Copy and then paste the entire contents of the log in your post.
Do not have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
