    Hi ceyermann,

I would leave those programs for now. If you follow the instructions below we can also see the list of programs more clearly.

Please download MiniToolBox http://download.bleepingcomputer.com...iniToolBox.exe and run it.

    Checkmark following boxes:
    • List Installed Programs
    • List Users, Partitions and Memory size

Click Go and post the result.

    Should I remove?
I agree with Zep and say, "no". Just leave them alone. Especially those from Microsoft.

The real question here is "why?" Why do you want to remove them? Are you running low on disk space?

The general rule is, if you don't know what it is, or why it is there, leave it. If you are running low on disk space, the best solution is to uninstall programs you downloaded and installed, but no longer use. You should also clean out the clutter and Windows own Disk Cleanup is great for that, and already included so you no need to download another program that will take up space.

Thanks Zep and Digerati. My laptop is 4 years old and I am trying to find ways to make it run smoother. it is somewhat slow to boot up. I run CCleaner, auslogics defrag, Security Essentials, Spybot, Superantispyware and Malwarebytes on a regular basis. I guess I'll live with the slow boot.

First, a long boot time does NOT automatically result in or indicate any sort of performance problem. Does it run fine once it fully boots? Sadly, you have not told us anything about your system. All we know is it is 4 years old and a notebook. What OS? How much RAM is installed? Does it take a long time to boot into Safe Mode? How long?

At best, long boot times just means you have a lot of stuff loading with Windows. Do you have all those programs starting at boot? You don't need a real-time defragger. And if running Windows 7 or later, you don't need SpyBot running at boot either. And you don't need, and should not use more than one anti-malware solution running at the same time too. So with MSE, you don't need SAS or MBAM running at boot. Keep them for periodic, "manual" (on-demand) supplemental scanning, but they don't need to be, and should not be running in real time, at the same time as MSE.

Another common cause of long boot times is a bad driver, connected device, or mapped network drives. Check in Device Manager for errors (red or yellow warning icons). If you mapped (shared) networked drive or shared folder, disable that for testing. Disconnect any unnecessary or extra USB device and see what happens.

Simply uninstalling programs does nothing for performance - unless free disk space is critically low - and unless that program (or programs) loads at boot and consumes a significant chunk of resources.

Dell Latitude FS4. running XP pro. 1.95 Gigs of RAM.

Sorry to ask simple question. How do I know if SAS and MBAM are running on boot? do I simply disable or remove them and use occasionally?

    Sorry to ask simple question.
Simple question is a relative term. No apologies required.
How do I know if SAS and MBAM are running on boot? do I simply disable or remove them and use occasionally?
It is not likely MBAM is running at start, unless you paid for the full version. But SAS Free can be set to run at boot by default. Is the SAS icon in your System Tray (next the to clock) after you boot? If you look in SAS's preferences menu, there is an option to start with Windows.

1.95Gb of RAM is an odd amount. I assume you have 2Gb installed and are using on-board graphics, which steals... err... shares some of your system RAM. While 2Gb is decent amount of RAM for XP, it still is not a lot, and that can certainly affect boot times.

I note on my XP Pro system with 2Gb, it typically took over 4 minutes to fully boot with all my startup programs and necessary security. But once fully booted, performance was fine. So I ask again, "Does it run fine once it fully boots?" "Does it take a long time to boot into Safe Mode?" How long does it take to fully boot? Any errors in Device Manager? Did you try disconnecting unnecessary devices?

And we are still waiting for the results of the MiniToolbox scan.

yes SAS is on toolbar. I went to settings and unchecked start up with windows box. Boot time is about 4-5 minutes. All runs fine after boot.

    Hi,

There's nothing weird there in the list, except,

PriceBlink (Version: 3.1) Firefox add on.
Automatically finds Lower Prices While You Shop! Did you install that? This has nothing to do with boot up, it's just something I noticed, and sets off alarm bells for me. Is there other adware that is going unnoticed, lets check an see.

    Download AdwCleaner
    • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
***Note: Windows Vista and Windows 7 users:
Right click in the adwCleaner.exe and select
    • Click the Search button.
    • A logfile will automatically open after the scan has finished.
    • Please post the content of that logfile in your next reply.
    • Or you can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[R1].txt.
